Eco-friendly Products - easy Kitchen swaps

How easy is it to change to an eco-friendly lifestyle?

From this journey to a greener lifestyle, I learned that changes don’t have to be drastic and that we can do it slowly. Every time I need to replace a product (because it no longer works), that’s when I try a new green alternative. This way, the change becomes easy and progressive.

I have made these swaps one at a time, with no stress attached, and looking into different products to see which one fits our family and lifestyle.

Eco-friendly Reusable Bags

We use single-use plastic storage bags for everything; from storage to seeds starting, snacks, and freezing food; to name a few.

These reusable storage bags are a great eco-friendly alternative!

They are freezer-safe. I use these reusable bags to freeze some of my vegetables, and they work well; also, I use them to store veggies, snacks, and cooked food.

I haven’t tried them with liquid yet, but I never used disposable bags for liquid either.

Reusable ziplock bag drying after washing

It needs to be hand-washed and let dry before reusing them. I use small containers to let them dry properly.

For food with strong odors like onion, I used a Sharpie marker and wrote the name outside the bag, so I know that this bag is only for onions.

If I use them to store already-cooked food, I let it cool down before using these bags. It doesn’t resist hot temperatures. I even damaged one by pouring hot water on top of it, but I think that disposable bags don’t resist hot temperatures either.

Using these reusable bags also saved money because I don’t need to spend on single-use storage bags as I used to.

Always read the instructions before using these bags.

Glass Containers

We use disposable plastic containers in many different ways. Plastic containers may lead to unwanted toxic chemicals in the food we consume, and these containers are generally non-biodegradable.

Glass storage containers are a great eco-friendly alternative!

Benefits of using glass containers.

  • More durable
  • Resists more to hot temperatures (check label first)
  • Reusable
  • Dishwasher safe (check label first)
  • Eco-friendly choice
  • Generally safe to store food and liquids

I have been using storage glass containers for many years now. Until today and after several moves, none have been broken.

I have bought them as I need them, so they don’t affect our budget and they last longer than plastic ones.

Eco-friendly Reusable Baking Mat

I have been using a reusable Baking Mat for a while now, and they work well. This eliminates the use of Parchment Paper and Aluminum Foil in my baking.

This eco-friendly product is non-stick, and It’s super easy to clean! I have used it for cooking roasted vegetables, meringues, and cookies, among others. And so far, none of the food has stuck to the mat.

I have also used unbleached-compostable parchment paper to bake, and they worked great too.

There is another reusable baking mat made of silicon, but I haven’t tried them yet.

Dish Scrub Sponge pads

As it was time to change my old dish pad, I decided to try an eco-friendly alternative.

I have tried two different kinds of Dish Scrub Sponge Pads, and they work great.

Coconut Scrub pads: They are made from coconut (coir) fiber. In the beginning, it felt a little bit stiff, but after a few days of use, it felt softer and cleaned well. It dries fast, so it will be less likely to grow mold. I have washed them in the dishwasher, but they didn’t resist many washes. I have one that I haven’t put on the dishwasher, and it lasts a long time.

Kitchen Loofah Sponge: These plant-based sponge pads are soft, so don’t scratch your plates, and they are biodegradable. I frequently put them in the dishwasher, and they have resisted keeping their shape.

For more sticky items to clean, I use an eco-friendly dish brush.
