eco-friendly christmas tree ornaments

The idea of creating eco-friendly Christmas tree ornaments was always on my mind, and there are many options to choose from. These ornaments can be made by reusing cardboard paper or natural materials like oranges or pine cones.

A plus benefit of making your own ornaments is the time we share with our kids to create different crafts. I have many eco-friendly decorations that my daughter has made through the years, and those are priceless. Every year, when we start decorating our tree, we talk and remember all those moments we share together.

Make sure to check at the end of this post for more beautiful Christmas tree decoration ideas from some of my blogger friends’ websites!

Why do I want to make eco-friendly ornaments?

There are many reasons I can think of:

  • They are made from natural or recycled materials.
  • Ornaments that are made with natural materials like oranges or cinnamon sticks bring a delicious aroma to the house.
  • It makes a beautiful holiday craft to make with my daughter.
  • Because they are handmade, add extra beauty and create a memory.
  • This is a way to reuse different kinds of materials that we already have at home.
  • Save money, as they are really inexpensive.

Five Eco-friendly Christmas tree ornaments

There are many options to create eco-friendly Christmas tree ornaments. I will share the five eco-friendly ornaments that I made this year.

1. Orange slices Ornaments

eco-friendly christmas tree ornaments - dry oranges

These dehydrated orange slices are super cute and bring a delicious aroma to the house. You can use your oven or dehydrator to make this beautiful ornament, and it is 100% natural.

I used these oranges in different ways for decoration, from creating a garland to adding them as part of my dining table centerpiece. I have a step-by-step guide on making dehydrated orange in my post “Beautiful centerpiece with natural materials” that you can refer to.

2. Dough Ornaments

These dough ornaments are super easy to make, and you can adapt them to your taste. I have seen these ornaments made with cinnamon or ginger, but I decided to add rose water instead to the mix to include a delicious aroma to the ornament.

Materials

  1. Mix all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Roll out the dough with a rolling pin. Use flour to avoid the dough sticking to the table.
  2. Use your favorite cookie cutter to create the design you are looking for. Remember to open a small hole before baking if you want to hang them on the tree. Bake for 1-2 hours at 250°F or until hard. Let it cool completely before decorating.

3. Paper Tube Flowers Ornaments

eco-friendly christmas tree ornaments - flowers made with paper tubes

I have made different eco-friendly crafts with paper tubes. These flowers came out really cute, and I added a tiny pine cone in the middle to add a natural touch to these ornaments.

Materials

  • Paper tubes
  • Hot glue machine or school glue
  • Hot Glue Stick
  • Metric ruler
  • Scissors
  • Cotton Cord

For this craft, I cut 1/4 inch strips from the paper tube. Fold them in half and glue them together with hot glue. You can add in the middle of the flower a sparkling stone, a small pine cone, flower, or just leave then as it is.

4. Pine Cones Ornaments

Pine cones are one of my favorites. I picked these pine cones carefully in the fall, and they kept their beautiful shape. Before I use them, I wash them with water and soap to eliminate any bugs or dirt attached to them and let them dry.

I feel pine cones don’t need much decoration as they are pretty in their original condition. Adding some pine branches in the bottom adds a pop of color to the picture. I also add a cord on the top of the pine cone to hang them on the tree.

Materials

  • Pine cones
  • Cotton Cord

5. Cardboard Trees Ornaments

These cardboard trees were an enjoyable holiday craft to make. I reuse boxes from the ones I get in the mail from my online orders.

Materials

  • Boxes
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Cotton bakers twine
  1. Draw or print a cut-out Christmas tree. Trace the outside of the box and cut the lines.
  2. To cover the rough edges, I added a cotton cord to the edges. Using a hole punch, I open a small hole on top and add a cotton cord to hang the ornament on the tree.

Useful tips

  1. If you are making several batches of dough ornaments, use gloves to mix the dough. The mix contains salt and it can make your hand dry.
  2. The time of baking for the dough ornaments depends on the thickness of the ornament.
  3. To complete my Christmas tree I used a thick cotton yarn as a garland.
