Homemade Deodorant without Coconut Oil
I like to try different oils and kinds of butter for the skin to see how each benefits us, so I decided to make a deodorant without coconut oil, and we love it!
Homemade products are my favorite, I get to choose which ingredient to add, and they are easy to adapt to my family’s needs, and I even get to select the quality of these ingredients.
Why a deodorant without coconut oil?
Coconut oil is a common ingredient in Natural deodorants. As you know, I have a homemade deodorant recipe with coconut oil that we like, but my daughter does not like the smell of coconut, so I decided to try other oils, and they worked wonderfully.
Coconut oil has wonderful properties, it is also a great carrier oil, but it can also feel heavy on the skin for some people.
What is a carrier oil?
In natural homemade products, sometimes we use essential oils that, as you know, are extremely concentrated. Carrier oils help to dilute the essential oils. Also, it is important to say that Carrier oils add their own properties to the skin.
What is plant-based butter for the skin?
Plant-based butter is deeply moistening creams, usually made with natural ingredients like shea butter, mango butter, and cocoa butter among others. Each butter contains its own nutrients and benefits.
My favorites carrier oils and plant-based butter for my homemade products
As homemade natural products can be personalized to our own needs, each person has their favorite carrier oils and butter that will benefit their own skin type. There are many in the market, but I want to share the ones I have used in my homemade personal care products.
Carrier Oil
Apricot Oil: This is one of my favorites! It is a light carrier oil that nourishes our skin. Great for mature skin.
Grapeseed Oil: This is also a light carrier oil, a great moisturizer, and skin balance. I use it in my daughter’s products as I found it the lightest carrier oil I have used.
Coconut oil: This is a heavy carrier oil. It is highly moisturizing. I would not use it for oily skin type.
Sweet Almond Oil: Contains many nutrient properties, including antioxidants that may benefit the skin.
Plant-base Butter for the skin
Shea Butter: Contains a high concentration of vitamins and fatty acids.
Mango Butter: Contains many vitamins and properties, including antioxidants that may be beneficial for the skin.
Cocoa Butter: For me is the heaviest I tried, so I use it in small quantities. Also, it does contain a strong chocolate odor which I like, but it will be a personal preference.

Ingredients
- 6 tablespoons Mango Butter
- 3 Tablespoons Grapeseed Oil
- 3 Tablespoons Apricot Kernel Oil
- 6 Tablespoons Beeswax
- 5 Teaspoons Arrowroot Powder
- 2 1/2 Teaspoons Baking Soda
- 4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil (optional)
How do I make this Deodorant without coconut oil?
Add the beeswax, grapeseed oil, apricot kernel oil, and mango butter to a double boiler pot.
Let it melt completely and take it out of the heat.
Add the baking soda, arrowroot powder, and essential oil (optional) to the mix, with the mixture still liquid. Combine all ingredients well with a whisk.
Pour the mix into the deodorant container and let it completely cool down.
Useful Tips
- If you have beeswax pellets, you can measure them with a spoon. If you have a block of beeswax, I shred it to dissolve it easily in the double boiler.
- I do prefer white beeswax to yellow. You can also use vegan wax like Candelilla Wax.
- I have used this deodorant without the essential oil, which works well.
- Each body is different and can react differently, even with natural ingredients. Baking soda is very alkaline and rarely may cause skin irritations; in this case, you need a different recipe.
- With every product we make at home, it is always recommended to try it in a small area first.

Hi Agne! Thank you for reading my recipe.
The beauty of making our own products at home is that we can adapt them to our own needs.
I haven’t tried making a deodorant without baking soda since we are not allergic to it. I was looking online for other recipes and saw some people increase the amount of arrowroot powder.
I hope this help.
Have you ever made this without the baking soda?
Thanks!
