Simple Homemade Deodorant Recipe
This simple homemade deodorant recipe has worked great for my family. It is made with natural ingredients and can be adapted to our own needs.
I love making homemade products like body butter, lip balm, and hand soap. Next on my list was to make my own deodorant. We have already switched to Aluminum Free deodorants many years ago, so the idea of making my own was always on my mind.
I tried to make homemade deodorant in different ways. Actually, my first try didn’t work as I wanted, but then my second try was great! If you are used to making your products at home you will notice that sometimes we have to make small changes to the base recipe in order to adapt it to our own needs.
Each body is different and that’s the beauty of nature. This is a base recipe, I even added the essential oil as optional. This recipe has worked great for my family.
Why do I want to make a homemade deodorant?
There are many reasons attached to this but these are my main reasons:
- Reduce the number of chemicals we get into our bodies and mother earth.
- I can adapt it to my own needs
- I can use eco-friendly containers
Transitioning
I read a few articles about the transition period to a natural deodorant which they said a transition can take around two to four weeks. Remember each body is different. At home, we have already transitioned from antiperspirant to aluminum-free deodorant many years ago. Now, we are changing to Natural Ingredients or Homemade Deodorant.
Can I make this deodorant without beeswax?
Yes, you can make this deodorant without beeswax, but the texture will be different. When I made it without the beeswax, the texture was too soft, so I had to store it in a container like a small mason jar and use a stick to take the portion I wanted to use and apply it with my fingers.
I have not tried it yet, but there are also vegan wax alternatives that can be used if you are looking for consistency and vegan.

Tools
- Double boiler pot
- Measuring spoons
- Deodorant Containers
- Whisk
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoon Shea Butter
- 3 Tablespoon Coconut Oil
- 4 1/2 Tablespoon Beeswax
- 4 1/2 Teaspoon Arrowroot Powder
- 1 1/2 Teaspoon Baking Soda
- 4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil (optional)
How do I make this homemade deodorant?
Add the beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter to a double boiler pot.
Let it melt completely and take it out of the heat.
Add the baking soda, arrowroot powder, and essential oil (optional) to the mix, with the mixture still liquid. Combine all ingredients well with a whisk.
Pour the mix into the deodorant container and let it completely cool down.
Eco-friendly containers
Like any product I have made, I always try to find an eco-friendly container for storage. With this deodorant, I found three different options:
- Brand New Plastic Container: They can be found online and can be reused afterward. It need to be clean and disinfected well before reusing them.
- Cardboard Container: I got it in a local store, but I saw some empty cardboard deodorant containers online similar to the one I got.
- Reuse an existing container: The plastic container in the picture above was from my old deodorant. I took all stickers off, clean them, and disinfected them well before reusing them.
Tips for cardboard containers
Because I have used cardboard containers on my lip balm, I have some tips to add:
- Pour a small amount into the base and let it stand for a few seconds before adding the rest of the mix. This will create a solid base.
- This works better with recipes with wax include, because this will make the process of push up easier.
Natural Deodorant
I add this option because we have a busy life, and sometimes we can run off our homemade deodorant. So I like to have a store-bought deodorant for any emergency. This will also work if you like to buy them instead of making them or maybe you got an unexpected visitor that forgot its own at home.
Because I like to have an extra one, I was looking for a deodorant made with natural ingredients and in an eco-friendly container similar to the one I was making.
Useful tips
- If you have pellets of beeswax, you can measure with a tablespoon. In case you have a block of beeswax, I do shred it so that I can dissolve it easily in the double boiler.
- I have used this deodorant without the essential oil, and it works well, but I like to add some aroma to it, and for me, lavender is the winner.
- Each body is different and can react differently even with natural ingredients. Baking soda is very alkaline and rarely may cause skin irritations, in this case, you need a different recipe.
- With every product we make at home, it is always recommended to try it in a small area first.
