Easy to make no-sew placemats
These easy to make no-sew placemats can be used for any occasion like Thanksgiving Dinner table Decor or Christmas table decor! Made with natural materials, beautiful and versatile. An eco-friendly DIY craft.
We have the everyday placemats that we wipe clean after each meal, but I love to have something different for special occasions. As I’m going more into my journey to green, I wanted to see what materials I have at home that I can reuse to make unique placemats for thanksgiving and Christmas.
Then I remembered that I had a really long burlap table runner I got from Hobby Lobby 4 years ago to decorate one of my niece’s birthday parties. As we advanced with my use and reuse mindset, I decided to cut the table runner to make these placemats.
I like the rustic interior design look that I’m aiming for in my home; burlap was the perfect material for this project.
The natural burlap color is neutral, so I wanted to add a cotton lace ribbon that highlights the placemat but doesn’t overpower the look to adapt it to any occasion.
What is burlap?
Burlap is a woven fabric generally made from the jute plant. There are some synthetic burlap fabrics in the market, so if you are looking for natural material, make sure it says 100% natural.
Why do I use hot glue?
Burlap is hard to sew, so for me, it was easier to get the project done with hot glue. Since the burlap texture has a lot of holes, I got the help of a lollipop stick to avoid burning my fingers while doing this project.

Useful tips
- I use burlap for this project, but you can always use cotton fabric and sew your own mats.
- You can also use a no-sew hemming tape for regular fabric.
- I have a small dining table; the final size for my placemats is 16″ x 12″. If you wish, you can make them bigger; just make sure you leave an extra inch on each side for the hem.
- I use a lace ribbon, but you can use a ribbon with a different design.

These are so beautiful! I live the idea to use hot glue along with a pocicle stick to attach the two pieces together. These would make pretty centerpieces for a fall wedding too.
