When I was designing my urban garden for this year, which includes vegetables, flowers, and herbs, I knew something was missing.
Last year we were lucky to have some beautiful visitors to our balcony. Bees and butterflies appeared almost every day. We also had birds coming in a couple of times, so I decided to add a bird feeder to my urban garden design this year.
What is the difference between a birdhouse and a Birdfeeder?
What is the difference between these two, and which one do I choose?
Birdhouse: These are shelters. You can add a birdhouse any time of the year, but the best time to put it up is in the Fall season so that birds will have a warmer shelter and nest for winter. On the opposite of a bird feeder, adding food to a birdhouse may attract predators, so maybe better to avoid adding food to this structure.
Bird Feeders: Bird feeders are (as its name says) made to feed the birds. It doesn’t have holes for birds to sleep in and has an open concept for them to eat. You can put it in your yard all year round. It must be cleaned at least every two weeks or more often if it’s heavily used. Also, it’s recommended to be suspended at least 5″ from the ground.
Since I live in a building apartment, it won’t be as quiet as it needs to be for a birdhouse, so I decided to make a bird feeder instead.

How to make this bird feeder?
- The roof: Place 12 sticks in a horizontal row and attach them with three vertical sticks. Use all-purpose glue for this task; it sticks better with this kind of material. I tried using hot glue instead but it didn’t hold, so better to use all-purpose glue.
- The bottom of the structure: Let’s make the base while the glue of the roof gets dry. Make a square interchanging the sticks. I did six rows tall. Then, add two sticks to the middle of the two sides. This is for the birds to stand.
- The base: I made two bases, one to glue at the bottom of the bird feeder and another one to slide in the middle of the structure for easier cleaning. The bottom base contains 11 sticks in a horizontal row and two vertical.
- The base that slides in the middle of the feeder contains 8 sticks in a horizontal row and two vertical (these I had to cut to make it fit).
4. Decoration: This is where you can let your imagination flow. I found this birch bark on the grass the other day, so I used it for the roof. Because the birch bark is uneven, I used hot glue to attach it to the roof.
I like how my balcony looks with this new addition! We look forward to having birds coming in this year and hearing their beautiful singing in the morning!
