I like to add a touch of aroma to the house. The store’s bought air freshener, even though smell good, it always give me allergies. I was sneezing all day long. So I decided to make my own diffuser.

This allows me to control how much essential oil to add, and I know which ingredients contain.

Before I started using reeds diffusers, I got an electric one. Then I thought of buying a couple more to add to each bedroom, but then I found reed diffusers. Reed diffusers don’t need electricity to work. You don’t need to plug diffusers in every room to have a pleasant aroma. We will save energy, and it looks beautiful!

I can also customize the aroma to match the season of the year. In summer, I like to add orange essential oil and geranium in spring. There are so many aromas to choose from.

Why do I use reed sticks?

One common thing I started to see in all the recipes for DIY diffusers was the use of reeds sticks. In the beginning, I thought about using bamboo sticks (which I have at home), but then I started to read why it is recommended to use reed sticks.

You can appreciate the differences between bamboo sticks and reed sticks in the picture above. The reed sticks (picture on the right) have tiny holes in the middle, which allows the flow of the oils through them. The bamboo stick (picture on the left) is solid, so it is more difficult for the oil to flow.

Which kind of containers to use for my homemade reed diffuser?

Eco-friendly containers

To continue our journey to zero waste, I wanted to use containers I already have at home. Here are some examples of containers that you can use at home. The one on the left is a glass container from a yogurt I bought last week, the one in the middle is a Vanilla Extract container, and the one on the right is a small mason jar.

It is recommended to have a jar with a narrowed top to keep the aroma for a more extended period. But I will use what I already have at home. Also, because we are using essential oils, it is recommended to use glass containers.

Useful Tips

  1. I use grapeseed oil as a carrier oil because is what I have at home, but any lightweight with light aroma carrier oil will work for this homemade diffuser like sweet almond oil, fractioned coconut oil, apricot kernel oil among others. I will avoid avocado oil or olive oil.
  2. Fractioned coconut oil is more liquid than regular coconut oil.
  3. When choosing your essential oil, take into consideration if you have pets at home. Search which essential oils don’t affect your pet.
  4. You can add a little bit more or less essential oils to the mix depending on how strong you like it to be.
  5. Once a week, I turn the reed sticks upside-down to get the aroma back.
  6. Because we are adding aroma to our home, try to buy organic, 100% essential oils.
